Dr. Meffert started his career as a family physician and then went on to become an exceptional board-certified dermatologist. Jeff and his wife, Paula Lyons, graduated from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center (UTHSCSA) Family Medicine Residency Program more than 30 years ago. He and his wife (still a practicing family physician) volunteered in our student-run free clinics. Jeff has contributed a number of photographs to all of our color atlases and was always helpful when we asked him for an image.
Jeff recently passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 60. He was known for his great sense of humor and excellent teaching. He had been happily teaching family physicians dermatology for decades. When he was the program director for the UTHSCSA Dermatology Residency Program he had welcomed our Underserved Family Medicine Dermatology Fellows as learners alongside his dermatology residents. His family has had to deal with too many tragedies, including the death of his oldest son just a few months before his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Jeff was a fine photographer and one of the smartest dermatologists. He was also an active editor and writer with an interest in medical ethics. His family, friends, residents, students, patients, and colleagues miss him greatly. We dedicate this book to Jeff as he touched so many lives in a positive way as a great man, a great doctor, and a great teacher.
