Foreword

The increasing prevalence of skin cancer and the parallel rise in the cost of skin cancer procedures make the disease a progressively growing concern for all physicians. Skin cancer's impact on patient populations makes it imperative that all physicians have a detailed understanding of the disease, its manifestations, and its treatment. This textbook provides its readers with information about skin cancer that is broad in scope and yet accessible and easy to understand. Each chapter includes a summary section, a “don't forget” section, clinical pearls, and patient education points that make the book practical for both the student and practicing physician.

The book contains 64 chapters, supplying readers with in-depth information on a variety of topics pertaining to skin cancer and dermatology. It begins with chapters discussing a wide range of skin neoplasms, from common lesions such as basal cell carcinoma to higher risk lesions such as malignant melanoma, as well as other rare tumors, such as Merkel cell carcinoma. Skin cancer in specific patient populations, such as immunosuppressed patients and pregnant individuals, is then explored. Surgical and medical treatments for skin cancer are also described in great detail, familiarizing readers with the potential therapies available for patients with a skin cancer diagnosis. These include treatments such as surgical excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, among others. Finally, the book expands on other less commonly addressed topics, such as the psychological and educational aspects of skin cancer and new technological advances in the field of dermatology.

The contributors of this text have constructed a comprehensive guide to the study of skin cancer. The format of the book allows the reader to study topics granularly or to simply review key points by perusing the concise summaries at the beginning of each chapter. The authors have succeeded in creating an instructional text that is both detailed and updated, providing students, physicians, and health care professionals with the latest and most extensive review of skin cancer to date.

I want to congratulate Dr. Nouri and all the contributors for compiling this thorough and easy-to-use textbook that covers all major aspects of skin cancer. As the president of the Skin Cancer Foundation, I believe this is a very important textbook that should be used by every dermatologist, oncologist, surgical oncologist, primary care physician, and any other physician that deals with skin cancer, and it is also a great reference for patients.
