AB  - In  the  1950s,  Blank  demonstrated  that  low  moisture  content  of  the  skin  is  a  prime  factor  in  dry  skin  conditions.1  It  is  now  known  that  the  symptoms  of  dry  skin  can  be  treated  by  increasing  the  hydration  state  of  the  stratum  corneum  with  occlusive  or  humectant  ingredients;  smoothing  the  rough  surface  with  an  emollient;  restoring  the  integrity  of  the  skin  barrier;  increasing  natural  moisturizing  factor  (NMF)  or  the  activity  of  aquaporin;  and  controlling  the  calcium  gradient.  Choosing  the  correct  cleanser  is  also  crucial  in  the  treatment  of  dry  skin  (see  Chapter  6,  Overview  of  Cleansing  Agents).
