AB Rocky  Mountain  spotted  fever  (RMSF),  the  most  severe  of  the  rickettsial  infections,  is  characterized  by  sudden  onset  of  fever,  severe  headache,  myalgia,  and  a  characteristic  acral  exanthem;  it  is  associated  with  significant  mortality  particularly  in  children  under  age  4.
