The common feature for all these devices is that they are “color-blind” in theory, and should not pose significant risks for darker skin, as they do not interfere with the chromophore melanin. Specific studies addressing dark skin patients with these devices is limited and it is generally assumed that because of the lack of competing chromophores, skin tightening with all the aforementioned devices should be safe in skin of color. The bigger controversy is the actual efficacy of these devices in actual three-dimensional skin tightening, regardless of the color of the skin. This chapter will review the various devices utilized for skin tightening, their mechanisms of actions, issues regarding skin of color, and potential complications.
